do girls do this?

this is my daughter zoe when she was like 9 or 10.

now she's 17 and for the next three weeks she's taking a computer code writing class at columbia university.

out of 19 kids in the class, she's the only girl.

on the first day of class a kid came up to her and said, "i didn't even think there'd be one (girl)."

so, where are all the girls? how come they're not spending three weeks learning C?

there's been a lot of discussion about getting more girls into math and science but it's a big world and we need a variety of people with a variety of skills. yes, there will be girls going into tech fields but more will probably go into non-tech related areas---like zoe's twin sister who is working at MOMA this summer. i don't think this is a function of girls not feeling comfortable or shut out or intimidated by the boys it's just a matter of what they're interested in.

at first zoe wasn't psyched about being the only girl in her class but now that the class is underway she's gotten over that. she's got bigger things to worry about....like tonight's homework.
