today i made chicken soup for the jewish holidays and i thought of my bubbe---probably one of the most fun people ever. i spent countless summers with her in a shack on savannah beach and she use to come stay with us in cincinnati when my parents went on vacation. she would get off the plane wearing her apron and of course there would always be chocolate turtles in her pockets. there was always something cooking and baking in her kitchen. always. but she never let that get in the way of going out for lunch, playing cards or gossiping with her best friend, ruthie.
if my soup comes out good, i'll know who to thank.

i just read in the new york times (so it must be true) that the united states is prolonging its presence in Iraq.
what a colossal waste of resources.
i wonder where we would be if we had taken all the money we used to fund the wars in iraq and afghanistan and put it towards education.
will we ever learn?

friends...
i spent the day in baltimore looking at johns hopkins with sammy.
at one point in the day she met up with a friend who is currently a freshman there so i was on my own for about an hour. i went looking for coffee and found the cafeteria. it was pouring, so i went in. suddenly i was transported back to freshman year. i remember those awkward few days when you didn't really have any friends so you just sort of stood there. i saw a bit of that around the cafeteria. people sitting by themselves, half reading their blackberry half wondering if they're really eating alone.
i remember vividly the first two friends i made. jeffrey and carol. i think it was carol that came up to me and asked me if i wanted to go to disney world.
of course i said yes...it wasn't like i had anything else to do.

power to the people...
hurricane irene wasn't too exciting. at least not where we were.
we tried to make the best use of the time at home by working on college essays and reading. but we got stir crazy pretty quickly so we took a lot of photos. here's one of our hurricane photo sessions.
for us the worst part was losing power. after 4 days in the dark, we finally got our power back last night. i love LIPA.
